Guinea fowl are an African chicken, a bit wilder than regular poultry.
The
eggs are excelent to eat though a bit smaller than chicken eggs.
They are a great organic
pest control as they are diligent at getting
ticks and garden pests.
You do need a lot of room for these guys to roam or very understanding neighbors!
They are also great guardians as any strange animals (that includes people)
will
have them making a very loud alarm call and large flocks have been known
to chase stray dogs
and wildlife right off the property.
They do fine in a pen that has flight netting on top (they fly very well!)
but
once they are free ranged, penning them will cause them to stop laying eggs.
For this reason
I recommend keeping one pair always penned and let the rest
free range. Then let the penned
pair hatch out a new batch of keets each year.
This will replace free ranged birds lost to
accidents and provide you with
a steady supply of eggs all summer.
Their eggs are a little tougher to crack and a little smaller so if a recipe
calls
for two eggs, use three of the guinea eggs.
