Silkie hen
IMG_1363.JPG

Silkie chickens are a very sweet natured bantam breed. Their feathers are fluff so they feel like rubing a kitten.

They make great mothers and a lot of folks keep them to incubate eggs from other breeds. I've used them for incubating turkey eggs.

They are such great setters that they will go broody on a plastic easter egg or nothing at all and they will steal eggs from other birds to sit on when they can.

Silkies come in both bearded and non-bearded and they have 5 toes instead of the normal 4 toes of other breeds of chickens. Mine are all bearded and my colors are white, buff, red, blue and blue splash.

Incubation takes 21 days and they start laying eggs when they are 8 to 10 months old.
